Rhubarb relish

The next recipe in the book, that is pretty legible is Rhubarb Relish. This recipe has a note next to it stating "This is very good". I'm not sure what rhubarb relish is exactly, or what one would use it on- but it looks interesting. Ice cream maybe? Toast? Here is the recipe exactly as it is written. 1 qt rhubarb 1 qt onions or less chopped 1 teaspoon salt, red and black pepper to taste. 3 Cups brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon each of cinnamon, allspice, ginger. Cook al together slowly -(45 minutes) stirring often, burns easy Seal hot
